hand rails and gates

Hand rails and Gates

Translyft guardrails and safety gates provide edge protection and controlled access for lifting tables and lifting platforms. Installed around the platform perimeter, they reduce the risk of falls and prevent access to moving parts. Implementing our guardrails and interlocked gates helps comply with the EN 1570 safety regulations for lifting tables used to transport goods and even personnel above 0.5 meters.

Safety guardrails and gates are commonly used on goods lifts,  loading bays, mezzanine access lifts, and personnel work platforms where operators work at height. Designed for industrial environments, Translyft platform railing systems help establish safe and accessible working zones.

Durability and Maintenance

Translyft guardrails and safety gates are designed for continuous industrial use and daily exposure to material handling equipment such as pallet trucks, rolling cages, and forklifts.

To maintain safe operation, hinges, latching mechanisms, mounting points, and electronic interlocks should be inspected regularly as part of the statutory annual lifting table service and routine safety maintenance.

Technical Specification

All Translyft guardrails and safety gates are manufactured with a minimum platform railing height of 1100 mm in accordance with EN 1570 requirements. Higher rail and gate configurations can also be supplied.

The systems are available in several material finishes depending on the operating environment:

  • Painted Steel
Suitable for standard indoor production, assembly, and warehouse environments. Available in the full range of RAL colours.
  • Galvanised Steel
Designed for outdoor installations or environments exposed to moisture and demanding weather conditions.
  • Stainless Steel
Recommended for hygiene-sensitive industries such as food production, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and medical environments.

Types of Edge Protection Guardrails and Pallet Safety Gates

Translyft offers several guardrail and gate configurations designed for different lifting platforms, workflows, and operating environments.

  • Square Profile Guardrails (40 × 40 mm)

The standard square-profile configuration provides high rigidity and is commonly used on industrial work platforms, goods lifts, and loading applications that require durable edge protection.

  • Round Profile Guardrails (Ø 48.3 mm)

Round-profile platform railing is often used on personnel work platforms where operators regularly move around the platform and require a comfortable handhold during operation.

  • Removable Guardrails

Removable platform railing can be used when temporary platform access or multidirectional loading is required. It allows individual rail sections to be removed or added as needed.

  • Sheeted Guardrails and Gates

For lifting platforms installed in public or publicly accessible environments, Translyft can supply sheeted railing and gates, enclosing the rail system using solid or mesh sheeting. This improves access protection and reduces the risk of climbing.

FAQ about rails and gates

Find answers to further questions in this FAQ.

  • How high can a platform be without a railing?

Under EN 1570, lifting platforms carrying personnel must be equipped with guardrails and safety gates when the travel height exceeds 0.5 metres. For lifting tables used only for goods handling, the required safety configuration depends on the application and workplace risk assessment.

  • What are other requirements for lift table guardrails besides the minimum height?

Lift table guardrails must also include intermediate protection, such as kick plates and mid-rails, to prevent falls or objects from slipping through the barrier. The guardrail system must be strong enough to withstand operational loads and impacts, while safety gates must be configured to maintain protected access during lifting operations. For personnel work platforms, the railing design must also provide sufficient clearance for safe and ergonomic hand positioning.

  • Can I install removable guardrails on a loading dock lift?

Yes. Removable guardrail sections are not used often on loading platforms and goods lifts where flexible side access or multidirectional loading is required. However, sometimes it makes sense that individual sections can be removed temporarily and reinstalled when edge protection is needed again. Then they are often made from aluminium to make them light and easier to manage.

Mezzanine Safety Gate Types

Most safety gates are configured with an outward-opening design to maximise usable platform space and simplify access. We also offer inward-opening gates recommended for workspaces where the surrounding space is restricted.

Safety gates can be equipped with electronic interlocks that prevent the lifting table from operating unless the gate is properly closed. Two interlock configurations are available depending on the gate type and platform application:

  • Interlock Type A

Used on specific inward-opening gates where the gate remains unlocked while the lifting platform is moving.

  • Interlock Type B

The gate locks automatically while the lifting table is moving and unlocks once the platform reaches its designated position.

Advantages of Translyft Guardrails and Safety Gates

Translyft guardrails and safety gates provide several operational and safety advantages for lifting platforms used in industrial and commercial environments.

  • Improved Fall Protection

The rail and gate system creates a protected working perimeter around the lifting platform, reducing the risk of falls during lifting and lowering operations.

  • Defined Working Areas

Handrails and gates help establish clear platform boundaries and controlled access points, improving safety around elevated work areas and loading zones.

  • Flexible Configurations

The systems can be configured with different rail profiles, removable sections, sheeted panels, platform railing layouts, and gate types to match operational requirements and available space.

  • Compatibility with Different Environments

Available in painted, galvanised, and stainless steel finishes, the systems can be adapted for indoor production areas, outdoor loading environments, and hygiene-sensitive industries.

We are also certified ATEX manufacturers and can therefore deliver solutions to potentially explosive atmospheres.
